The historical area has been designated a urban monument reserve. The most valuable monuments are the gothic Cathedral of St. Bartoloměj, renaissance town hall, and Jewish synagogue. The town of Plzeň is presently the fourth largest town in the Czech Republic. Fast growth of Plzeň dates back to the first half of the 19the century when the town brewery was founded.
